BURIAL OF THE PAZYRYK CULTURE AT THE KHANKARINSKY DOL BURIAL GROUND (NORTH-WESTERN ALTAI)
The article presents the results of a study of the mound of the Pazyryk culture at the Khankarinsky Dol burial ground in the Northwestern Altai. The features of the burial rite and inventory, as well as the results of radiocarbon dating, allow us to date the necropolis to the IV-III centuries BC. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the funeral rite and reconstruction of a unique female headdress with zoomorphic applications and finials, which significantly complements the materials on the costume complex of Central Asian nomads of the Scythian-Saka period. Keywords: funeral rite, nomads, Pazyryk culture, Altai, reconstruction, headdress. Introduction Since 2001. The Krasnoshchekovskaya archaeological expedition of Altai State University, led by P. K. Dashkovsky, is investigating a complex of monuments in the vicinity of the village of Chineta in the Krasnoshchekovsky district of Altai Krai (Fig. 1). More than 40 objects of Pazyryk, Turkic, Srostkin and Kyrgyz cultures have been excavated within the archaeological microdistrict. There are also known monuments of the Upper Paleolithic period (Dashkovsky and Kungurov, 2003). The Khankarinsky Dol burial ground is located on the second above-flood terrace of the left bank of the Ini River (a left tributary of the Charysh River), 1.2 km south-southeast of the village of Chineta (Fig. 2). The mounds are grouped in two "chains" along the South-South line with minor deviations (Fig. 3). At present, the monument is located on the territory of the village of Khankarinsky Dol. 29 objects were recorded. It is possible that there are more mounds on the burial ground, but because of the thick humus layer, they can only be detected during the process of sounding the ground with a metal probe and opening a significant area with a continuous excavation. It is this method that was used in the study of funerary structures.- 1. Location of the Khankarinsky Dol burial ground in the Altai Territory. This work was supported by th ... Read more
